Insane Idea:
PRIMER - Would it be possible to spawn objects all over the current world, but have them be completely invisible or appear as simple dirt UNTIL a certain variable is met?
example - the world is filled with a new kind of ore that is very rare, but it can't even be seen until the player is at level X or above
I'm imagining some kind of checker that could load as a chunk is loaded that decides a "yes" or "no" for rendering certain blocks.
This could be totally ridiculous and not be possible at all, but if it IS possible, or something similar is, please let me know because I have an INSANE IDEA.

It is possible to load blocks when you get close to it..
So it should be possible to load blocks when you have level.
Edit :
There are anti x-rays that does not allow you to load ores if you are not close to that ore 5 blocks.

if it is possible, check this next-level idea -
every time you gain a character level (gaining exp can be tweaked in many ways from how much we get to what activities give it to us, so we can make this more easy or difficult) you are given a few points that you can put in to a few different categories.
Strength - as you increase this skill it slightly increases the maximum damage you do
Perception - increases the chance to see new rare blocks (the higher the level, the more rarer blocks you can see and mine)
Dexterity - increases what tools you are allowed to equip and how fast you swing regular tools
Constitution - increases natural defense and/or maximum health
it would be the easiest GUI to make, ever, you could probably even gut some shitty RPG mod and use it as a shell, but this would be a crazy awesome way to "build" your character, and it would also allow for everybody to have their own little twist as well, only people who pump perception would have super rare ores, which would boost the market, and with this we could implement new weapons and tools but put limitations on who can use them based on their skill levels. Also, aside from the VIP levels that require money this could be a great way to encourage new AND old players to stick around so they could continually build their character, which is actually a useful and meaningful thing now since the more you play the more stuff you will naturally be unlocking.

With my last idea, any new items, foods, naturally growing plants, vegetables, fruits, ores, even eventually mobs can be implemented. The only difference is that what you are able to see is completely based on your character skill levels, and what you can actually use is also based on this.
I can't think of a better way to promote and encourage people to join and stick around for a long time. Every time Enlighten rolls out a new item he can pick who is is geared towards (newbies or vets) based on the levels he codes in to the block. An item can now specifically benefit a brand new player or keep old players around to try and level up to the point where they are actually able to harvest or use it.

Okay, from what I've seen, you guys are quite keen on a physical restriction via classes, would you be happy to see some kind of 'unlock tree' in the future where you had to unlock certain tiers before you can use them?

With this idea from Aleck, lots of the other ideas can be implemented too, however there needs to be a list in the manual of what level you need to be to unlock certain stuff rather than it being a mystery.

Just a quick example/idea for the progression of unlockable blocks -
Perception:
Level 5 - Cocoa Plants (the new jungle tree plant, I'm sure there is a mod of it) (could be crafted in to cookies and maybe coffee or something?)
Level 10 - Grapes on vines (could be crafted in to grape juice and wine maybe?)
Level 15 - Adamantite ore (could be used to craft next-level tools or make a new kind of bomb)

Level 10 - Unlock ability to consume and craft grapes
Level 15 - Unlock ability to craft Adamantite

I think tools/buckets/other items should be smelt-able for their ores.
I'd really like to plonk a few of our spare buckets into a furnace to recover iron.
